Mazé, small and typical village in France, used to be a peaceful place to live before the locals fought over learning that the old abbey was about to be renovated to house refugees. Aristide, former handyman and electrician and soon-to-be neighbour of the newcomers, fears for his peace of mind and soon joins the R.C.D.L (Resistance Committee for the Defence of our Lands), hellbent on countering the mayor’s decision. However, Aristide slowly sheds his prejudices against the migrants as he meets them, coaxed by his daughter Salomé. Aristide’s story may be fictional but the portrayals of Polish worker Olek, British hostess Mrs. Smith and son of Catalan migrants Genesio are inspired by the work of geographer and researcher David Lessault, reminding us that France has always been a land of refuge.
