Pierre Bourdieu has completely revolutionised the field of sociology and is known today as a major intellectual public figure. What if often overlooked though is his coming-of-age story: being as young as 25 in Algeria caught in the middle of a decolonization war. Although certified in philosophy early in life, he is called up for military service in the first years of Algerian War and integrated into the Intelligence department, at the very heart of propaganda. He is then demobilized a couple years later but will try and make the most of the experience by staying in Alger despite the war, to teach sociology. Enamoured with a country reminiscent of his own rural roots, he studies the Algerian society’s brutal transformation and discovering himself through sociology in the process. This poses them question: how did this experience turn young Bourdieu into the sociologist that we know, with such as empathetic and critical eye and alert to all forms of domination? How can it also help us better understand Algeria, so well-known and misunderstood at the same time? An Algerian investigation retraces Bourdieu’s steps in search of perspective and genesis and their relevancy in today’s societal landscape.
